We have been working at an upgrade of the Wireless Leiden network to the so-called IRIS-concept for some time now. In short this means that all hardware will be based on an embedded system (by Alix) and tat all interlinks (wireless interconnections between nodes) will be rebuilt according to the WiFi standard 802.11a, which has a higher frequency than the one being used now. There will be much less interference with home networks then. The performance of the nodes that have already been upgraded exceeds our expectations.
At the meeting of the board of April 1, 2010 it has been decided to give this upgrade process a boost, with the code name "Breedband" (Broadband).
This operation will contain three phases:
1 - "Breedband infra". In this phase the ca. 24 nodes, within the ring that can be seen as the "backbone" of the network wil be rebuilt according to IRIS.
2 - "Breedband centrum". In this phase the nodes within the "backbone"-ring will be rebuilt.
3 - "Breedband regio". The nodes outside the "backbone"-ring will be rebuilt.
Users may experience during the operation "Breedband" problems with the receipt because some parts of the network will be unreachable.
It has been decided to start preparations for the operation "Breedband infra" immediately, and to complete this preparation during April 2010. The building phase of "Breedband infra" has been planned during May and June 2010.
The start of the building phase of "Breedband infra" will be on Saturday, May 1 2010 at node Cope.
The board,
Rene.
